Question 1

What is Quassia indica used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Quassia indica is classified as a bitter herb and has traditionally been used for digestive disorders, fever, intestinal parasites, and liver-related complaints. The bark and heartwood are the parts most commonly used in decoctions and formulations. These applications are based on centuries of traditional use and should be explored under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

Question 2

Where does Quassia indica grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Quassia indica is found in the lowland tropical forests and intermediate zone forests of Sri Lanka. It also grows in traditional home medicinal gardens, where rural families cultivate useful plants alongside food crops. The plant prefers humid, tropical conditions typical of the island's wet zone.

Question 3

Is Quassia indica the same as Quassia amara?

Accepted Answer

They are related but distinct species within the same family, Simaroubaceae. Quassia amara is native to tropical America, while Quassia indica is found in South and Southeast Asia including Sri Lanka. Both contain bitter quassinoid compounds, but they have different geographical ranges and may have somewhat different phytochemical profiles.

Question 4

What part of Quassia indica is used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

The bark and heartwood of Quassia indica are the parts most commonly used in traditional medicine. They are typically prepared as a decoction or infusion. The intense bitterness of the bark, caused by quassinoid compounds, is considered a key indicator of the plant's medicinal quality.

Question 5

Are there any scientific studies on Quassia indica?

Accepted Answer

Pharmacological research has documented antimalarial, antimicrobial, insecticidal, and anti-inflammatory activities associated with quassinoid compounds found in the Quassia genus. Some studies have specifically examined Quassia indica as a potential source of natural insecticides. However, formal clinical trials establishing safe and effective human therapeutic doses are limited, so traditional use should be guided by qualified practitioners.

Question 6

Is Quassia indica safe to use?

Accepted Answer

Like many bitter medicinal plants, Quassia indica should be used under the supervision of a trained Ayurvedic physician rather than self-administered. High concentrations of quassinoids can be toxic, and appropriate dosing is essential. Pregnant women and those with underlying health conditions should exercise particular caution.

Question 7

Can I see medicinal plants like Quassia indica while visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, several botanical gardens and Ayurvedic herbal gardens in Sri Lanka maintain collections of traditional medicinal plants. The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy is a well-known destination for plant enthusiasts. Some eco-lodges and village tour experiences also include guided walks through medicinal plant gardens.
