Question 1

What is Gymnema lactiferum var. lactiferum?

Accepted Answer

Gymnema lactiferum var. lactiferum is a woody climbing plant native to Sri Lanka, belonging to the family Apocynaceae. It produces a distinctive milky latex and is recognized in Sri Lanka's traditional Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. The species is cataloged by Lakpura under the reference code LK94006825.

Question 2

Is Gymnema lactiferum the same as Gymnema sylvestre?

Accepted Answer

No, they are related but distinct species within the same genus. Gymnema sylvestre is the more widely studied species, found across India and Southeast Asia. Gymnema lactiferum is specifically associated with Sri Lanka and may have a different phytochemical profile, though both are of interest to Ayurvedic practitioners and botanists.

Question 3

What are the medicinal uses of Gymnema lactiferum in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Traditional Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practitioners have used various parts of Gymnema lactiferum, including leaves, bark, and latex, in formulations addressing metabolic and digestive conditions. Specific preparations vary by practitioner and region. Scientific documentation of its uses remains less extensive than for Gymnema sylvestre.

Question 4

Where can Gymnema lactiferum be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant typically grows in moist lowland and mid-elevation forests, often at forest margins and along riverine habitats in the wet and intermediate climatic zones. Forests in Sri Lanka's southwestern wet zone — including areas near major nature reserves — support concentrations of native medicinal lianas including Gymnema species.

Question 5

What does the species name lactiferum mean?

Accepted Answer

The epithet lactiferum comes from Latin meaning 'milk-bearing,' referring to the milky latex the plant produces when its stems or leaves are cut. This characteristic is both a useful field-identification feature and a trait noted by traditional healers in assessing the plant's properties.

Question 6

Are Gymnema plants used in herbal teas or supplements?

Accepted Answer

Gymnema species, particularly Gymnema sylvestre, are widely used in herbal teas and dietary supplements marketed for blood sugar support. Gymnema lactiferum has not achieved the same commercial scale, but it belongs to a genus that is increasingly studied for functional food and nutraceutical applications.

Question 7

Is Gymnema lactiferum endangered in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Detailed conservation status data for Gymnema lactiferum specifically is limited in widely available sources. However, like many specialized forest lianas in Sri Lanka, its wild populations are likely affected by habitat loss from deforestation. Conservation of Sri Lanka's wet zone and intermediate zone forests is therefore important to its long-term survival.
