Question 1

What is Ficus trimenii?

Accepted Answer

Ficus trimenii is an endemic fig tree found only in Sri Lanka, classified within the family Moraceae. It is documented in Sri Lanka's catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants and named after the nineteenth-century botanist Henry Trimen, who directed the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya.

Question 2

Where does Ficus trimenii grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is associated with moist lowland and mid-elevation forest zones in Sri Lanka, particularly in the wet zone where humid tropical rainforest habitat persists. It is not widely cultivated and is most likely encountered within or near protected forest areas.

Question 3

How is Ficus trimenii used in ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

Ficus trimenii is recorded in Sri Lanka's traditional ayurvedic plant catalogue, though detailed pharmacological studies on this specific species are limited. Within the broader Ficus genus, bark, latex, and leaves have historically been used in preparations for inflammatory, digestive, and dermatological conditions in South Asian traditional medicine.

Question 4

Is Ficus trimenii an endangered species?

Accepted Answer

As an endemic species restricted to Sri Lanka's shrinking wet-zone forests, Ficus trimenii faces habitat pressure from deforestation and land conversion. Formal conservation status assessments for many endemic Sri Lankan plants remain incomplete, but the broader threats to lowland rainforest habitats are well documented.

Question 5

Are there other endemic Ficus species in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Sri Lanka hosts several endemic and near-endemic fig species alongside Ficus trimenii. The genus Ficus is ecologically significant across the island, with its fruits providing a critical food source for birds, bats, and primates — including several endemic mammal species.

Question 6

Where can I learn about Sri Lanka's medicinal plants when visiting?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, near Kandy, is the best public venue for exploring Sri Lanka's native flora, including medicinal species. Spice gardens in the hill country and guided rainforest walks near reserves such as Sinharaja also offer direct encounters with traditionally important plants.

Question 7

Who was Henry Trimen, and why is a Sri Lankan fig named after him?

Accepted Answer

Henry Trimen was a British botanist who served as Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya from 1880 until his death in 1896. He produced the foundational scientific catalogue of Sri Lankan flora, and several plant species — including Ficus trimenii — were named in his honour by contemporaries and later taxonomists.
