Question 1

What is Ficus exasperata used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurveda and related traditional systems, Ficus exasperata is primarily used for its leaves, bark, and latex. Leaf powder has applications in oral hygiene and skin treatments, while decoctions have been used for digestive complaints and fever. Traditional use is well documented, though clinical evidence remains limited.

Question 2

Why are the leaves of Ficus exasperata so rough?

Accepted Answer

The rough texture is caused by dense, stiff trichomes — tiny hair-like structures — covering the upper surface of the leaf blade. This characteristic gives the tree its common name, the sandpaper tree, and is also reflected in the Latin species name exasperata, meaning roughened.

Question 3

Where does Ficus exasperata grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species grows across much of Sri Lanka's lowland and mid-elevation zones, particularly in tropical moist forests, forest edges, and secondary woodland in the dry, intermediate, and wet zones. It is a hardy pioneer species that regenerates well in disturbed landscapes.

Question 4

Is Ficus exasperata endangered or protected in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Ficus exasperata is not generally considered an endangered species and has a wide natural distribution across tropical Asia and Africa. In Sri Lanka, wild fig trees benefit from protections afforded to native vegetation within national parks and forest reserves, but the species is not subject to special protected status.

Question 5

What wildlife does Ficus exasperata support?

Accepted Answer

Like many fig species, Ficus exasperata provides food for a wide range of frugivorous wildlife, including endemic birds, bats, and primates. In Sri Lanka, species such as the purple-faced langur and Indian flying fox rely on fig fruit during lean periods, making fig trees an important element of forest biodiversity.

Question 6

Are there scientific studies on Ficus exasperata's medicinal properties?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a number of ethnobotanical and pharmacological studies, primarily from West Africa where the plant is also widely used, have investigated anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties of Ficus exasperata extracts. Research is ongoing, but formal clinical trials in humans remain sparse.

Question 7

Can Ficus trees be grown as bonsai?

Accepted Answer

Several species within the Ficus genus are well suited to bonsai cultivation and are among the most popular bonsai trees worldwide due to their vigorous growth, aerial root development, and adaptability to indoor environments. While Ficus exasperata itself is primarily a large wild tree, related cultivated Ficus varieties are readily available as nursery specimens.
