Question 1

What is Digitaria didactyla used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Digitaria didactyla is catalogued in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant register. Members of the Digitaria genus have traditionally been associated with cooling, diuretic, and anti-inflammatory applications in South Asian healing systems. The specific uses attributed to this species vary by practitioner tradition, and it is typically incorporated into compound decoctions rather than used alone.

Question 2

Is Digitaria didactyla native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Digitaria didactyla is not strictly endemic to Sri Lanka but is widely naturalised across the island's wet and intermediate zones. The species is native to tropical and subtropical regions broadly and has naturalised throughout Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. In Sri Lanka it is commonly found in open, disturbed ground and garden environments.

Question 3

What family does Digitaria didactyla belong to?

Accepted Answer

Digitaria didactyla belongs to Poaceae, the grass family, which is one of the largest and most ecologically important plant families on Earth. Within Poaceae, the genus Digitaria is characterised by its distinctive finger-like racemes. The epithet 'didactyla' refers specifically to the two-fingered arrangement of the seed-bearing spikes.

Question 4

Where can I learn about Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic plants as a visitor?

Accepted Answer

Several botanical gardens and dedicated Ayurvedic centres in Sri Lanka maintain medicinal plant gardens open to visitors. The central highlands and Kandy region are particularly well-represented, with a number of resorts offering guided tours alongside wellness treatments. The government's Ayurvedic hospital network also occasionally supports public education around traditional plant knowledge.

Question 5

How many plants are in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia documents hundreds of plant species with recognised medicinal applications. The catalogue spans trees, shrubs, herbs, and grasses, reflecting the island's exceptional botanical diversity. It is periodically revised as ethnobotanical research refines classifications and uncovers additional documented uses.

Question 6

What does Digitaria didactyla look like?

Accepted Answer

Digitaria didactyla is a low-growing, mat-forming perennial grass with narrow, fine-textured leaf blades and slender stems that root at the nodes. Its seed spikes are arranged in a characteristic two-fingered pattern. The plant is often cultivated deliberately as a fine-leafed lawn grass in tropical regions because of its dense, even growth habit.

Question 7

Are grass species commonly used in Sri Lankan traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Yes, grasses occupy a recognised place in Ayurvedic tradition. Classical Sanskrit medical texts classify grasses as a distinct category of medicinal plants, and several species are incorporated into compound formulations addressing conditions such as fever, urinary disorders, and inflammatory complaints. Sri Lanka's botanical diversity means the local Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia includes a number of grass species alongside more prominent trees and herbs.
