Accepted Answer

Cyanotis cristata is recorded in the Sri Lankan ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue, where it is associated with applications related to skin conditions, inflammation, and general tonic use. Where does Cyanotis cristata grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows in moist, shaded habitats across Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones, including forest margins, roadside banks, and damp grasslands. It can be found from the coastal lowlands up to the mid-country elevations. It favours areas with reliable rainfall and partial shade.

Question 3

What family does Cyanotis cristata belong to?

Accepted Answer

Cyanotis cristata occurs naturally in Sri Lanka and is included in the national catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants. Within Sri Lanka it is considered part of the island's native botanical heritage.

Question 5

How do I identify Cyanotis cristata?

Accepted Answer

Look for a low-growing, softly hairy herb with lance-shaped leaves that clasp or partially wrap around the stem. The small three-petalled flowers are blue to violet, and the stamens carry distinctive tufted hairs visible with a hand lens. It grows in moist, shaded spots such as forest edges and damp grassy banks.

Question 6

Can tourists visit ayurvedic herb gardens in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy also maintains extensive plant collections. Ayurvedic resort programmes are available across the island for those seeking a more in-depth experience.
