Question 1

What is Antidesma bunius called in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka, Antidesma bunius is commonly known by the Sinhala name Weera (වීර). It is also referred to as bignay or Chinese laurel in English, and carries various vernacular names across its broader range in South and Southeast Asia.

Question 2

Is Antidesma bunius fruit edible?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the fruit is edible. It is small, round, and tart, ripening from green through red to deep purple-black. The ripe berries can be eaten fresh or used to make jams, jellies, syrups, and fruit wines. The flavour is sharp and acidic, with sweetness developing at full ripeness.

Question 3

What medicinal properties does Antidesma bunius have?

Accepted Answer

In ayurvedic and traditional medicine, the leaves and bark are used for their astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, while the fruit is valued for its antioxidant content, including anthocyanins and vitamin C. Folk practitioners have also used preparations from the plant to support digestion and manage fever, though formal clinical studies remain limited.

Question 4

Where does Antidesma bunius grow naturally?

Accepted Answer

The species is native to South and Southeast Asia, from India and Sri Lanka through to the Philippines and northern Australia. In Sri Lanka it grows in lowland humid forests, secondary vegetation, and home gardens, typically below 1,000 metres elevation in the wet and intermediate zones.

Question 5

Is Antidesma bunius recognised in Sri Lanka's official ayurvedic system?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is catalogued by Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda as part of the country's official list of indigenous medicinal plants. This gives the species a formal standing within the government-regulated framework of traditional medicine rather than purely informal practice.

Question 6

What wildlife benefits from Antidesma bunius?

Accepted Answer

The fruit clusters attract birds and small mammals that feed on the berries and disperse the seeds. Because individual clusters ripen gradually over several weeks, the tree provides a sustained food resource for frugivores, contributing to seed dispersal networks in secondary lowland forests.

Question 7

Can Antidesma bunius be grown in a home garden in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the tree is well suited to home gardens in Sri Lanka's lowland wet and intermediate zones. It is relatively fast-growing, tolerates a range of well-watered soils, and provides shade as well as fruit. Bear in mind that both a male and a female tree are needed for fruit production, as the species is dioecious.
