Green Turtle Villa is a modern four-bedroom beachfront villa at Kosgoda on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, rented whole and next to the turtle hatchery. Now run by The Serendipity Collection (it was formerly Green Turtle Villa by Yoho), it is a white, flat-roofed house of glass doors and open-plan living, with a long pool, a lawn shaded by coconut palms and its own chef and staff, about an hour and a half's drive from Colombo.
There is only one thing to book here: the whole villa, so your party has the house, the pool and the garden to itself.
The bedrooms have large glass windows and doors looking out over the tropical garden. If your group includes people who would rather not share a floor, ask the villa staff how the four bedrooms are arranged before you allocate them.
Meals are cooked in the villa by the in-house chef and served by the villa staff, so you eat when and where you like, at the long dining table or wherever suits you. Tell the staff your preferences in advance and the menus will be planned around your group. Laundry is also handled by the staff.
Most days are spent between the pool, the shaded lawn and the beach beyond it. The villa also has five resident dogs, Lily, Lola, Polo, Marco and Tarzan, who are happy to join guests on walks along the sand, which is worth knowing if anyone in your group is not comfortable around dogs. Further afield, the villa can help arrange boat trips, surfing, diving and whale watching along the coast.
Yes. The villa stands right beside the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, where eggs rescued from poachers are hatched and the young sea turtles released, and guests can visit and spend a day helping out. On most nights, turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on the beach in front of the villa, so ask the staff to tell you when there is a chance of watching them without disturbing them.
The resort beaches of Induruwa and Bentota lie a short drive to the north, along with Bevis Bawa's Brief Garden and Geoffrey Bawa's country estate at Lunuganga. To the south, boat trips through the mangroves of the Madu River start near Balapitiya. Kosgoda station on the coastal railway is close by if anyone in your group wants to arrive or explore by train.
The villa is about 95 kilometres in a straight line from Bandaranaike International Airport, and the villa puts the drive from Colombo at about an hour and a half; allow longer from the airport, which is north of the city. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Green Turtle Villa, which takes your group and its luggage all the way to the door.
It suits families and groups of friends who want a private, staffed beach house with a pool, rather than a hotel, and who like the idea of sharing the beach with nesting turtles. For more choice along this stretch of coast see our places to stay in Kosgoda.
