Radisson Blu Resort, Galle is a 172-room beachfront resort at Gintota, about 5 kilometres up the coast from Galle Fort, where every room has a balcony or terrace. Two modern blocks rise behind a large pool, a lawn and the beach at Gintota, on the Colombo road just north of Galle. It is built for beach holidays: pool and beach activities every day, a kids' club, a rooftop bar and five places to eat and drink.
All 172 rooms and suites have a private balcony or terrace, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, a fridge, an in-room safe, tea and coffee making facilities and an iron. The categories below are the hotel's own.
Only the Deluxe Room - Garden View faces the gardens; every category with "Sea View" in its name looks out over the ocean. If you need twin beds, ask when you book: the Deluxe and Premium rooms come with either a king-size bed or twin beds, while the Junior Suites and the Suite have a king-size bed only.
Fusion is the main restaurant, overlooking the pool and terrace, serving a buffet breakfast and local and international dishes at lunch and dinner. By the pool, Sforno Poolside Trattoria bakes wood-fired pizzas and The Bay Poolside Bar serves light snacks, salads and cocktails through the day. YAZU at the Beach serves Asian fusion food on its terrace from lunch until late, and the Bommu Rooftop Bar, open from the afternoon until midnight, has the best view of the resort and the sea at sunset, along with cocktails, food and a pool table. In-room dining is available around the clock.
The resort runs a daily activities programme around the pool and on the beach: lap races in the early morning, water aerobics, beach volleyball, beach soccer, kite flying on the sand, table tennis and billiards. Sunrise and sunset yoga sessions by the ocean are complimentary on set days of the week, and private sessions can be arranged. The fitness centre is open 24 hours and free for guests, and the spa offers massages, hot stone therapies and beauty treatments, daily from 9 am to 8 pm. There is also a jewellery shop with Sri Lankan gems and handcrafted pieces.
Yes, families are one of the main audiences. The resort is part of Radisson's Rad Family programme, so children get a welcome pack and their own menus, and the supervised Kids' Club keeps them busy with games, arts and crafts and activities about the southern coast. Connecting rooms in the Deluxe Sea View category, the Presidential Suite and the beach activities all help. For arrivals before the 2 pm check-in or flights after the 12 noon check-out, a lounge with lockers, bathrooms and showers gives you somewhere to freshen up. The hotel has lifts, a step-free entrance and wheelchairs to borrow.
The UNESCO-listed Galle Fort, with its ramparts, lighthouse, museum and restaurants, is about 4.7 kilometres away, a short tuk-tuk ride. Beyond the fort, Unawatuna beach is around 9 kilometres away and the Japanese Peace Pagoda on Rumassala hill, with Jungle Beach below it, around 7.5 kilometres. Up the coast, Hikkaduwa is about 13 kilometres away in a straight line, and the boats for whale watching leave from Mirissa, about 32 kilometres to the east.
Yes. Trains run daily from Colombo Fort along the coastal line to Galle Railway Station in about two hours, and the hotel is about 5 kilometres from there by taxi or tuk-tuk. The local station at Ginthota is on the same line; check which trains stop there before relying on it.
The resort is about 130 kilometres from Bandaranaike International Airport, and the hotel puts the drive at around two hours and fifteen minutes by the Katunayake and Southern expressways. The easiest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Radisson Blu Resort, Galle, which takes you all the way to the door.
It suits families and couples who want a full-service beach resort with a big pool, plenty to do on site and Galle Fort within easy reach, as well as groups and wedding parties: the Grand Ballroom holds up to 400 guests, and ceremonies can be held on the beachfront, including Indian weddings with an outdoor mandap. Travellers looking for a small boutique hotel inside the fort walls should look elsewhere. Radisson's other resort here, Radisson Collection Resort & Spa, Galle, is a different hotel on the Matara road on the other side of Galle.
