A few minutes along the coast, Mihiripenna Beach is quieter still, with a natural rock pool that is safe for children and, at times, stilt fishermen on the reef. A cookery class nearby teaches traditional Sri Lankan curries and coconut sambol. A short drive west, Galle Fort is the UNESCO-listed old town of ramparts, museums, cafés and boutique shops.
Yes. The coastal railway from Colombo stops at Unawatuna and at Galle, where more trains stop; from either station a tuk-tuk will bring you to the door.
The resort is about 135 kilometres from Bandaranaike International Airport in a straight line, and most of the drive south is on the Southern Expressway. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Lavendish Beach Resort, which takes you straight to the hotel.
