Number 11 was the Colombo home of Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka's most influential architect. It sits at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac on 33rd Lane, off Bagatelle Road in Colombo 3, shaded by a frangipani tree at the gate.
The house began as one of a row of four small bungalows. Bawa rented the third of them in 1959 and, within ten years, had bought all four and joined them into a single, inward-looking home. Narrow passages open into a wide living room and close again around courtyards, the bedroom and the dining room, with daylight brought in from above. It still holds furniture, art and objects from Bawa's own collection.
Number 11 is cared for by the Geoffrey Bawa Trust, a non-profit, and is not run as a conventional hotel. The Trust takes guests with an interest in architecture and the arts in two suites:
Good to know before you book:
Bawa's other Colombo house, De Saram House, is a short drive away, and his country estate, Lunuganga, is about two hours south near Bentota. Ask us about pairing the two with a private airport transfer.
