The Villa Bentota by KK Collection occupies the Mohotti Walauwa, a colonial mansion built in 1880 on the coast at Bentota, which Geoffrey Bawa turned into one of Sri Lanka's first boutique hotels. The designer Shanth Fernando refurbished it in 2007, adding a new wing, a pavilion and a swimming pool, and for years it traded as Paradise Road The Villa Bentota. KK Collection took it over in 2021 and renovated it again, keeping the old house, its tropical gardens and its small scale of individually designed rooms and suites.
The hotel stands at 138/18 Galle Road in Bentota, on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, between the main road and the sea. The beach lies just beyond the coastal railway line, which guests cross to reach the sand. Bentota railway station is about 1.2 km away and Aluthgama station about 2.3 km, both on the line between Colombo and Galle.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 110 km from the hotel by road, and the drive around Colombo and down the Southern Expressway usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. The easiest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the hotel in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The same service works in reverse for your departure flight. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to The Villa Bentota by KK Collection.
The hotel lists eight categories. Standard Rooms and Extended Standard Rooms are 45 m² and Superior Rooms 50 m², each with a king-size bed. The Family Room and the Junior Suite add a banquette bed, and the Suite and the Pool Suite are 70 m², the Pool Suite with its own private pool. The largest is the Mohotti Suite, 109 m² with two bedrooms. Suites have four-poster beds and bathrooms with both a rain shower and a separate bathtub.
The main restaurant sits under a pavilion-style roof and serves modern Sri Lankan cooking made with local produce, while Bawa's Bar has a western-style menu and cocktails with views across the palm-shaded lawn. The hotel holds themed dinners, from Thai to Middle Eastern, and a weekly seafood barbecue on the beach, where sundowner cocktails are also served. In-room dining is available, and the kitchen caters for vegetarian and other dietary needs.
Days here are spent between the gardens, the pool, which has a shallow section for children, the spa treatments and the beach. Bentota is known for the water sports and mangrove boat trips on the Bentota River, and Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa's own country estate, and Brief Garden, created by his brother Bevis, are both close by. Further along the coast are the turtle hatcheries of Kosgoda, the Madu River and Galle Fort. Lakpura can arrange private transfers and day tours to all of these from the hotel.
