Amri Ayurvedic Retreat is a small riverside retreat in Warapitiya, Dharga Town, just inland from Bentota on the banks of the Bentota River. It pairs rooms and cottages set in a garden with an Ayurvedic spa, a pool and a restaurant, and suits travellers who want a quiet stay near the coast with traditional Ayurveda treatments on site. Booking sites list it as Amri River Cottages and Ayurvedee Retreat.
The retreat stands on Retiketiya Road in Warapitiya, Dharga Town, a few kilometres up the Bentota River from the sea, on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka. Aluthgama railway station is about 3 km away and Bentota station about 3.5 km, and the beaches of Bentota are a short drive back towards the coast. Being away from the main Galle Road, it is a calmer setting than the beachfront hotels.
The drive from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) usually takes around two hours on the airport and Southern expressways, depending on traffic around Colombo. The simplest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the retreat in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The same service works in reverse for your departure flight. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Amri Ayurvedic Retreat Bentota.
Accommodation is in rooms and cottages, with river views from some and balconies looking over the pool from others. Each has air conditioning, a seating area, a flat-screen TV with satellite channels and a private bathroom, and the grounds include a garden, a terrace and a shared lounge.
The restaurant serves Sri Lankan, Chinese and Asian dishes, with breakfast every morning and room service available. The Ayurvedic spa offers traditional treatments and massages given by experienced practitioners, and there is a swimming pool for the hours in between. The retreat can also arrange canoeing on the river, cycling, with bicycles available to hire, cooking classes and sessions on local culture.
Bentota Beach is the place for swimming, sunbathing and water sports, and boat safaris head into the mangroves and backwaters of the Bentota River. Lunuganga, the country estate of the architect Geoffrey Bawa, is about 10 km away, and Brief Garden, the landscaped garden and art collection of his brother Bevis Bawa, is also close by. The Kande Viharaya temple in Aluthgama is another easy outing. Lakpura can arrange private transfers and day tours from the retreat.
