Kudakalliya Beach Houses is an independently owned, off-the-grid hideaway about ten minutes’ drive south of Arugam Bay, set between a quiet river and an empty stretch of beach. It is close enough to the town’s surf and cafes, yet far from the busy strip – and in season, elephants come down to bathe in the river.
Three beach houses hold eight rooms in all, which suits families and groups. Ganga Addara is a riverside duplex for five, with a double room downstairs and a triple upstairs. Sayura Unit A has an air-conditioned upstairs double, a balcony dorm room for three and an air-conditioned ground-floor quadruple by the garden. Sayura Unit B is a private family house for seven with its own dining. Individual houses, or the whole property, can be booked for exclusive use.
A local chef cooks Sri Lankan food from fresh, seasonal ingredients – breakfast, lunch and a choice of a regular or barbecue dinner – with afternoon tea and snacks too.
Guided safaris run to Kumana National Park (formerly Yala East) and Lahugala, and the ancient Kudumbigala Monastery rewards a climb with panoramic views. The beach in front is quiet, and a short walk south leads to Crocodile Rock and Elephant Rock, calmer beaches suitable for swimming. Yoga and surf classes can be arranged on request, and the famous Arugam Bay surf points are minutes away.
Check-in is at 1 pm and check-out at 11 am. There is no driver accommodation on site, but the team can arrange a room nearby.
