The Rosewood Manor

Rakwana, Sri Lanka

The Rosewood Manor is a three-bedroom country house on Rockwood Valley Estate, a private organic tea estate at Botiyatenna near Rakwana, looking out over the mountains on the edge of the Sinharaja rainforest. At 860 metres the air stays cool, with days typically between 18 and 26 degrees.

Each of the three bedrooms has a four-poster bed, teak floors, antique furniture and a terrace onto the mountain views, with a rain-shower bathroom, bathrobes, a safe and Wi-Fi. The house takes up to seven adults (or six adults and two children) and is looked after by a butler and an in-house chef.

Downstairs, the lounge has oversized sofas and a fireplace; up in the attic there is a bar, a pool table, a small library and indoor games. Meals are served in the dining room overlooking the valley, on the outdoor terrace by the fire pit, or as a private candle-lit dinner in the garden, using herbs and vegetables from the estate's own organic garden.

On the estate you can picnic beside a private natural stream, walk through the tea to a secluded waterfall, join a Sri Lankan cookery demonstration or take afternoon tea at sunset. Further afield are the Weddagala entrance to Sinharaja (about 1 hour), Handapan Ella falls and Udawalawe National Park (about 1 hour 20 minutes).

Getting there: Colombo is about 3 hours 20 minutes by road, Colombo Airport (CMB) about 3 hours 45 minutes and Mattala Airport about 2 hours 15 minutes. There are no rooms for drivers or guides on site; guest houses are nearby.
