The rhythmic yet soulful music reverberated through a host of traditional musical instruments, Sri Lankan folk music has always managed to captivate the hearts of many visitors who love arts and culture. From various drums to conch-shells, flutes and pipes, our classical instruments exude a sense of tradition and unique cultural identity.
The Thalampata belongs to the metal percussion instrument category, while these are two small hand held cymbals that have been joined by a string. Unlike the common larger cymbal, the Thalampata is smaller, and it fits in the palms of your hands well. The Thalampata holds a significant place in Sri Lankan music and cultural rituals, while the metal discs produce a distinct resonating sound when struck together. It is commonly used in folk music performances, traditional Sri Lankan dance forms and religious ceremonies.
