Question 1

What is Scleria pergracilis?

Accepted Answer

Scleria pergracilis is a slender sedge species in the family Cyperaceae, native to tropical regions including Sri Lanka. It is included in Sri Lanka's catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants. Like other members of the Scleria genus, it grows as a herbaceous plant in moist or wetland habitats.

Question 2

What are the medicinal uses of Scleria pergracilis?

Accepted Answer

Within the broader Scleria genus, traditional ayurvedic uses include preparations for urinary and kidney support, mild diuretic effects, and certain topical applications. Specific uses of Scleria pergracilis are documented in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant records. Any therapeutic use should be directed by a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 3

Where is Scleria pergracilis found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species favours moist grassy habitats, wetland margins, and paddy field edges at low to mid elevations. It is more commonly found in Sri Lanka's wet zone, which receives heavy annual rainfall, though it can occur in the intermediate zone as well.

Question 4

What family does Scleria pergracilis belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the Cyperaceae family, commonly known as the sedge family. This is a large family of grass-like plants found across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. In Sri Lanka, Cyperaceae is well represented in wetland and disturbed habitats.

Question 5

How many ayurvedic medicinal plants are native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka is documented to have several hundred plant species used in its ayurvedic and indigenous medical traditions, with official catalogues maintained by the Department of Ayurveda. The island's high level of plant endemism means many of these species are found nowhere else. Ongoing botanical surveys continue to refine and expand these records.

Question 6

Is Scleria pergracilis endangered or protected?

Accepted Answer

Specific conservation status information for Scleria pergracilis is not widely published in global databases, but many small herbaceous plants face pressure from habitat loss due to agricultural expansion and wetland drainage. Sri Lanka's protected area network provides indirect habitat protection for species of this kind.

Question 7

How is ayurvedic medicine regulated in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's ayurvedic practice is formally regulated through the Department of Ayurveda, which operates under the Ministry of Health. The department maintains official plant catalogues, licenses practitioners, and oversees registered formulations. Traditional medicinal plant use is documented within this framework alongside modern pharmacological research.
