Question 1

What is Scleria neesii used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Scleria neesii is listed in Sri Lanka's catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants, indicating a documented role in the island's traditional healing system. While specific indications are recorded in specialised ayurvedic texts, related Scleria species across South Asia have been associated with urinary and skin preparations. Formal clinical studies on S. neesii specifically are limited in published scientific literature.

Question 2

What family does Scleria neesii belong to?

Accepted Answer

Scleria neesii belongs to Cyperaceae, the sedge family. It is part of the genus Scleria, whose members are sometimes called razorgrasses or nut-sedges due to their sharp leaf margins and characteristic nutlet fruits. The genus comprises several hundred species distributed across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

Question 3

Where does Scleria neesii grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species favours moist, low- to mid-elevation habitats such as stream banks, canal margins, and the edges of paddy fields, particularly in Sri Lanka's wet zone. It grows wild and is not commercially cultivated. Habitat conservation in areas like the Sinharaja Forest Reserve helps protect such sedge communities.

Question 4

Is Scleria neesii the same as a razorgrass?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Scleria species are collectively referred to as razorgrasses because their leaf margins are rough enough to cause cuts. Scleria neesii shares this characteristic with others in the genus, though it is distinguished by specific features of its nutlets and inflorescence structure. Field identification can be difficult, and herbarium specimens are used as the definitive reference.

Question 5

How is Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalogue maintained?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains an official catalogue of medicinal plants used in classical and folk healing traditions. Each entry is cross-referenced with vernacular names in Sinhala and Sanskrit, habitat data, and recorded therapeutic uses. The catalogue is periodically updated and serves as a regulatory and research reference.

Question 6

Are there other sedge species used in Sri Lankan ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Yes, several Cyperaceae species appear in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic materia medica alongside Scleria neesii. Cyperus rotundus, known locally as kalanduru, is among the most widely recognised. The diversity of sedge habitats across the island — from highland grasslands to coastal wetlands — supports a range of species with traditional applications.

Question 7

Can travellers learn about ayurvedic plants while visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Many of Sri Lanka's botanical gardens, including the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, display labelled collections of medicinal plant species. Some village-based experiences arranged through destination management companies include introductions to traditional healing gardens and practitioners. Lakpura can incorporate such experiences into custom itineraries for travellers with an interest in ethnobotany or wellness.
