Question 1

What is Cassia fistula used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Cassia fistula is primarily used as a mild laxative and purifying agent. The fruit pulp is the most commonly used part, incorporated into formulations for constipation, fever, and skin conditions. Bark and leaf preparations also appear in treatments for inflammatory and rheumatic complaints.

Question 2

What is the Sinhala name for Cassia fistula?

Accepted Answer

Cassia fistula is known as Ehela (ඇහැල) in Sinhala. It is listed in the official catalog of Ayurvedic medicinal plants maintained by Sri Lanka's Ministry of Indigenous Medicine.

Question 3

When does the Golden Shower tree bloom in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cassia fistula typically flowers toward the end of the dry season, most visibly between March and May. During this period, the tree is often leafless and almost entirely covered in bright yellow flower clusters, making it particularly conspicuous along roads and in dry-zone forests.

Question 4

Is Cassia fistula the same as Cassia senna or Cassia tora?

Accepted Answer

No, these are distinct species with different therapeutic applications. Cassia fistula (Ehela) is a large tree with very long pods, used mainly as a laxative and anti-inflammatory. Senna (Cassia senna) and Cassia tora are smaller plants with separate traditional applications and should not be used interchangeably.

Question 5

Where does Cassia fistula grow naturally in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree is widespread across Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, growing in seasonal forests, temple precincts, and along roadsides. It is commonly found near ancient heritage sites such as Polonnaruwa and in the forest margins of dry-zone national parks.

Question 6

Is Cassia fistula safe to use as a home remedy?

Accepted Answer

While the plant's fruit pulp is a well-documented laxative in classical Ayurveda, it contains potent anthraquinone glycosides and should not be self-administered without guidance from a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. Incorrect dosage can cause adverse effects, particularly for children, pregnant women, or those with existing digestive conditions.

Question 7

What does modern research say about Cassia fistula's medicinal value?

Accepted Answer

Pharmacological studies have confirmed antimicrobial, antioxidant, and laxative properties consistent with traditional uses. Researchers have isolated active compounds including oxyanthraquinones, flavonoids, and tannins from various parts of the plant. Some studies also suggest hepatoprotective effects, though robust clinical trials in humans are still limited.
