A collection of Sinhala poetry by Ratna Sri Wijesinghe, published in Colombo by Godage International Publishers. The text is in Sinhala throughout, so readers will need to read the language to use the book.
Ratna Sri Wijesinghe was born in 1953 and comes from Galle. He was educated at Sri Sumangala College in Hikkaduwa and Richmond College in Galle, and read for a BA in Sinhala at the University of Peradeniya. His first collection of poems, Biya Nowan Ayyandi, appeared in 1975. Wassane is listed among the collections that followed, alongside Suba Udaasana, Madyama Yamaya, Sandhya Theertha and Sandagira Pamula.
Alongside the poetry he has written song lyrics, among them "Sudu Neluma Ko Sorabora Wawe", "Maala Girawiya", "Punsanda Raata" and "Lenchina" — songs familiar to many Sri Lankan listeners, and a part of his work that has carried his writing well beyond the readership for printed verse. Writing on modern Sinhala poetry, the Goethe-Institut has noted his social sensitivity as a poet of the 1980s and 1990s, the decades in which much of this body of work was made.
Godage International Publishers is an established Colombo house issuing titles in Sinhala and English across literature, history and scholarship, and has long published contemporary Sinhala poets.
This will suit readers of Sinhala poetry building a shelf of the post-1970s generation, students of modern Sinhala literature, and anyone who knows Wijesinghe through his lyrics and wants to read him on the page. For Sri Lankan readers abroad, and for libraries and university collections outside the island, a slim volume of this kind is ordinarily difficult to come by outside Colombo.
