Ayugiri Ayurveda Wellness Resort

Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

Ayugiri Ayurveda Wellness Resort is a 22-suite Ayurveda retreat on 54 acres at Pothana in Kimbissa, about 8 kilometres from Sigiriya Rock, where every suite has its own plunge pool. Formerly The Elephant Corridor, it was bought and refurbished by Browns Hotels & Resorts and reopened under its new name in June 2024. The resort is built around a full Ayurveda treatment centre with a resident Ayurvedic physician, so most guests come for a programme of treatments rather than a quick stopover.

What are the suites like at Ayugiri Ayurveda Wellness Resort?

All 22 suites are spread through the grounds and each has a private plunge pool. They are calm, simply furnished rooms in stone and dark timber, with canopied beds, and there are no televisions, in keeping with the resort's focus on rest. The resort sells two categories:

  • Suite With Plunge Pool – twenty suites of about 98 square metres, each with its own plunge pool. A suite takes two adults and one child.
  • Presidential Suite With Pool Deck – two family suites of about 235 square metres, each with two bedrooms, a pool deck, a private garden and its own treatment room, so therapies can be given in the suite. A suite takes two adults and two children.

Families are welcome: this is not an adults-only resort. If you need a particular bed arrangement, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm it with the resort.

What Ayurveda treatments and programmes are offered?

Treatments take place in the Ayuwása treatment centre, which has consultation rooms, seven treatment chambers, herbal baths, a steam room and sauna, and a Beheth Oruwa, the traditional wooden trough used for medicated oil baths. The resort runs its own pharmacy and prepares many of its own herbal medicines. A stay usually starts with a consultation, after which your treatments and meals are planned around your constitution.

The resort offers fourteen all-inclusive Swastha programmes lasting from five to thirty days. They range from short wellness and introduction-to-Ayurveda stays to longer programmes for weight management, stress relief, anti-ageing and joint and bone health. Five nights is the recommended minimum to feel the benefit, though shorter stays are possible.

What is the food like?

Meals are served at Amurtha, the resort's restaurant, which looks out towards Sigiriya Rock. The menus follow Ayurvedic principles and are adjusted to each guest's programme, no red meat is served and the resort does not serve alcohol. You can also eat away from the restaurant: by the lake at Wewa Addara, with a herbal high tea at Nidangala, at breakfast in the treehouse, or in your own suite.

What else is there to do at the resort?

Besides the plunge pool in every suite there is a freshwater swimming pool, and a yoga pavilion for daily yoga and meditation. The 54 acres take in the resort's own farm and bee farm, a lake and a treehouse, and lie beside the corridors wild elephants use to cross the area. A resident naturalist leads walks and excursions, and the resort can arrange cycling round Thalkote Lake, birdwatching, evening loris-watching at Popham's Arboretum, stargazing, pottery and a village tour.

What is nearby?

Sigiriya Rock is about 15 minutes' drive away, and the resort organises the hike up Pidurangala, the neighbouring rock with the best view of Sigiriya. The Dambulla cave temple is about 35 minutes away. For elephants, jeep safaris run to Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks, each about an hour away, and to the forests around Habarana, about 25 minutes away. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa is about 80 minutes' drive.

How do I get from the airport to Ayugiri Ayurveda Wellness Resort?

The resort is about 146 kilometres from Bandaranaike International Airport, a drive of roughly three to three and a half hours. The easiest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Ayugiri Ayurveda Wellness Resort, which takes you all the way to the resort.

Is this the hotel that used to be called The Elephant Corridor?

Yes. Ayugiri occupies the same site and buildings as The Elephant Corridor, which Browns Hotels & Resorts bought, refurbished and turned into an Ayurveda wellness resort. If you stayed at The Elephant Corridor or found it in an older guidebook, this is the same place under its new name. See the other Browns Hotels & Resorts properties, or our places to stay in Sigiriya if you would prefer a shorter, sightseeing stay.
