About this experience

This half-day cycling tour follows a route from Kandy city into the Hanthana Mountain Range, riding through one of Sri Lanka's oldest tea-growing landscapes before looping back to Kandy Lake via an off-road track in Heerassagala. The tour is suited to riders of moderate fitness, combining paved highland roads with gravel and dirt trail sections rated average difficulty. An experienced cycling guide accompanies the group throughout, providing context on the terrain, the estates and the broader history of Ceylon tea.

The morning begins at 08:30 at the entrance of E.L. Senanayake Children Park in Kandy, where the group sets off with mountain bikes and helmets provided. The route climbs into the Hanthana hills, reaching the Ceylon Tea Museum — a building with considerable history of its own. It was originally constructed as the Hanthana Tea Factory in 1925, fell out of use, and was later refurbished by the Sri Lanka Tea Board and the Planters' Association of Sri Lanka, reopening as a museum in 2001. Inside, visitors can walk through floors of vintage tea-processing machinery — rollers, dryers, fermentation tables — donated from working estates across the country, alongside a library devoted to the history of Ceylon tea. The museum also houses a tea café where a cup can be taken before continuing. Admission to the museum is not part of the tour package and is paid separately at the door.

From the museum the trail proper begins, winding down through the manicured rows of the Hanthana Tea Plantation. The Hanthana area was among the earliest in Sri Lanka to be successfully converted to tea cultivation, and riding through it gives a clear sense of the landscape that shaped the island's tea industry — bright green terraced bushes running up steep slopes, tall shade trees, exposed red earth on the cuttings, and occasional views across the valley to a reservoir below. The route eventually joins the off-road track at Heerassagala and brings riders down to Kandy Lake, with the tour concluding at approximately 13:30.

The roads on this tour are public roads shared with local traffic, and the guide manages the pace accordingly. Riders are expected to wear the provided helmets throughout. Those who wish to carry their own water beyond what is provided, or to purchase food along the way beyond the included water, should plan to do so independently, as additional food and drinks fall outside the package. Hotel pick-up and drop-off are not included; participants make their own way to and from the starting point at E.L. Senanayake Children Park.
