Written in Sinhala throughout, with no English text — a point worth noting before ordering from abroad.
Malani Surasinghe spent a long career inside Sri Lankan state schooling, first as a teacher and later as a principal, and this book draws on what she accumulated in those years. It is not confined to the classroom or to education policy as such. Her concern is with the places where Sri Lankan education does not fit the people passing through it — the small, easily missed points she believes need correcting — and she sets these out one by one from the vantage of someone who worked inside the system rather than studied it from outside.
The book will speak most directly to teachers, principals, parents and anyone following the debate about what schooling in Sri Lanka actually does to the children in it. Readers abroad with enough Sinhala to follow a sustained argument will find it a view from within the staffroom and the principal's office.
