Gal Oya Valley National Park is built around Senanayake Samudraya, Sri Lanka's largest reservoir, and the terrain shifts constantly as your jeep pushes deeper into it — open savannah and mountain grassland giving way to dense shrubland and tropical forest. Elephant herds, leopard, sloth bear, spotted deer and water buffalo move through the same landscape, and the birdlife is exceptional even by Sri Lankan standards — Spot-billed Pelicans, Red-faced Malkohas, Cormorants, Oriental Darters, Grey Herons, Sea Eagles and Grey-headed Fish Eagles are among the species you scan for on the water and in the treeline. Your driver doubles as your tracker, reading the ground and the canopy so you don't miss what's there.
The jeep is yours alone — a private 4x4 for one to six guests, three hours inside the park. At booking you choose your configuration: Jeep Only, with park entrance fees paid in cash at the gate, or Jeep with Tickets, with entrance included in your Lakpura booking. On either option you can add a guide as an optional extra, bringing specialist knowledge to every sighting. Pickup and drop-off are complimentary within 5 km of the park gate, and bottled water travels with you.
