A picture book for young readers, written in English by Sybil Wettasinghe, one of Sri Lanka's children's writers and illustrators. It belongs to a later group of story books she produced for children, and it is made for readers at the beginning of their reading lives rather than for confident readers working through longer chapters.
The production reflects that. The text is set in large letters and the book is short, so a child can hold the whole story in their head from one sitting to the next. Colour paintings run through it, pitched at the age group the words are written for. The publisher places it with primary school children, and the design decisions all point the same way: a book a young child can be read to from, then later read alone.
Wettasinghe's work in Sinhala and English has been a fixture of Sri Lankan childhood for generations, and her drawing is inseparable from her storytelling — the pictures carry as much of the book as the sentences do. This edition comes from M. D. Gunasena & Co., a Colombo publishing house with a long association with school and children's books in Sri Lanka.
Suitable for a home shelf, a classroom reading corner, or as a gift to a family abroad who want their children reading Sri Lankan stories in English.
