About this experience
This three-hour guided walk takes you through two of Colombo's busiest street markets and along the food stalls of Galle Face Green, tasting Sri Lankan street food on the way. It starts at Galle Face Green on Galle Road in the afternoon, at 3.00 pm or 3.30 pm, and runs all year round. An English-speaking guide leads the walk and bottled water is provided.
The walk opens at a small kiosk with a first taste of Sri Lankan fare, then continues to the market at Kollupitiya (Kolpetty), where stalls of fresh produce, meat and fish stand beside stores selling souvenirs and knick-knacks. Next comes the Colombo Fort area and the street market on Malwatta Road, with a stop for achcharu at the Achcharu Hut and a fresh drink at the Juice Hut.
Back at Galle Face Green, the street food stalls that line the green serve egg hoppers and plain hoppers, tempered kadala, and prawn and parippu vadai. The walk finishes at the open kitchens of Nana with a meal of kottu.
The price covers your English-speaking guide and bottled water. Hotel pick-up and drop-off are not included, so make your own way to the starting point; food and drinks other than those specified, gratuities and personal expenses are also extra. A booking takes up to eight people, the dress code is smart casual and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The walk is not wheelchair accessible.
