About this experience
This four-hour experience takes you into the heart of how Sri Lanka actually eats. A chef meets you at the cooking studio, walks you through one of Colombo's most alive market areas, and then guides you through preparing a full Sri Lankan home-cooked meal at your own station — a meal you sit down to eat at the end.
The tour begins at Pettah, the trading quarter that sits just beyond the walls of the old Dutch Fort and has been a commercial centre since the colonial era. Its name comes from the Tamil word for 'outside the fort', and the neighbourhood still carries traces of that layered past in its worn cobblestone lanes and age-darkened warehouses. The fresh produce section is a dense run of stalls piled with green and red chillies, tomatoes, garlic, ginger, limes, pineapples, potatoes, onions and leafy greens; the spice stalls sit nearby, fragrant and closely packed. Your chef walks you through the market, pointing out how to read the produce — colour, firmness, smell — and selecting what you will cook with later. Transport between the studio and market is by tuk-tuk or car, depending on the time of day and the weather.
Back at the cooking studio, the workshop moves through the preparation of a Sri Lankan rice and curry meal. Each participant works at an individual station with their own set of ingredients. Coconut work is a practical centrepiece: cracking and scraping the flesh by hand, then extracting the milk, are techniques central to Sri Lankan cooking that are hard to learn any other way. The chef explains the logic of the cuisine as the dishes come together — the balance of spice, the role of fresh coconut, the distinction between a wet and a dry curry — and the kitchen takes on the smell of a working Sri Lankan home.
A sample menu runs to steamed rice, a dhal or breadfruit curry, a chicken or fish curry, and several vegetable dishes. Once everything is cooked, you eat what you have made at the studio — lunch or dinner depending on which session you have chosen. The experience is available on any day of the week except Sunday. Morning sessions begin at 8:30 am and conclude at approximately 2:30 pm; an afternoon session is also offered, with timings confirmed at the time of booking. The studio address and directions are sent to you once your booking is confirmed.
Participants need to be aged twelve or older. The experience is run as a private booking rather than a shared group session, so the pace and the conversation with your chef can follow your own interest and pace. A water bottle is included; gratuities and any personal expenses are not covered.
