This is a Sinhala-language work, written and printed entirely in Sinhala script. Readers who do not read Sinhala will not be able to use it; there is no English text within. The title translates roughly as Buddhism and Criminology, which indicates the pairing the author has set himself — Buddhist thought on one side, the study of crime on the other.
The author, Ven. Pathegama Gnanissara Thero, is an academic in Buddhist philosophy attached to the Department of Buddhist Studies and Pali at the Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka. He holds a PhD in Buddhist Philosophy from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and an MPhil from the University of Kelaniya. His background is therefore scholarly rather than popular, and the book comes out of a university teaching and research setting rather than from devotional writing.
The publisher is Godage International Publishers, an established Colombo house that issues titles in Sinhala and in English across religion, history, literature and the social sciences. A great deal of Sri Lankan scholarly and semi-scholarly writing in Sinhala reaches print through imprints of this kind, and much of it circulates mainly within the island.
It will suit readers of Sinhala with an interest in Buddhist philosophy and its application to social questions — students in Buddhist studies departments, monastics, and general readers who follow Sinhala-language academic writing. For buyers outside Sri Lanka, it is the sort of title that is difficult to come across in bookshops abroad, since Sinhala academic publishing is rarely stocked internationally.
