Basilur Specialty Classics Earl Grey is a Ceylon black tea scented with bergamot essence, packed into 25 individually foil-enveloped tea bags. Each bag contains 2g of tea, and the whole pack weighs 50g. The foil envelope around each bag is recyclable and is there for a practical reason: it keeps the bergamot's fragrance intact from the moment of packing until the moment you brew.
The tea itself is 100% pure Ceylon black tea, grown and manufactured in Sri Lanka. Basilur's production facility is in Kelanimulla, Kelaniya, on the outskirts of Colombo, and every blend in the Specialty Classics range is made there. The pack carries the Ceylon Tea Lion Logo, issued by the Sri Lanka Tea Board, which is a formal certification that the contents are 100% pure Ceylon tea packed in Sri Lanka — not merely sourced from Sri Lanka and finished elsewhere.
Earl Grey is one of the most recognised flavoured teas in the world. The character of this version comes from bergamot essence — an oil derived from the rind of the bergamot orange — worked into the Ceylon black tea base. The result is a cup with the full-bodied depth of Ceylon tea carrying the citrus-floral note that defines the Earl Grey style.
Basilur was founded by Dr. Gamini Abeywickrama and produced its first collection in 2008. The company is registered with the Export Development Board of Sri Lanka and sells across international markets. The Specialty Classics line sits within Basilur's broader portfolio as the range built around the recognisable, long-established blends that made loose-leaf Ceylon tea famous.
To brew, place one bag in a cup, pour freshly boiled water over it, and allow it to steep for three to five minutes before removing the bag. The foil envelope keeps each bag fresh until it is needed, so the pack travels well and stores without requiring any special conditions beyond a cool, dry place.
