Piper chuvya

Piper chuvya is a climbing plant of the pepper family, Piperaceae, recorded in Sri Lanka only under cultivation. It is known locally as Siviya (සිවිය) and Mala bulat (මල බුලත්). The species belongs to the same genus that gives Ceylon black pepper its distinctive berries, and shares the family's typical climbing habit and jointed stems.

What does Piper chuvya look like?

It is a tall, almost glabrous (hairless) climber. The leaves on its fertile branches are short-petioled, with a blade measuring 12 to 20 cm long and 6.5 to 10 cm wide. Each leaf is obliquely ovate in shape, obtuse to rounded at the tip of the base, barely or not at all heart-shaped there, and distinctly asymmetrical where it meets the stalk. The leaf narrows gradually to a pointed tip at the apex.

The flowering stalk, or peduncle, is short, around 1 to 2 cm long. The species is dioecious, meaning individual plants bear either male or female flowers, not both. The pistillate (female) flower spike is 7 to 10 cm long at flowering and lengthens further as it develops fruit. Flowers are densely crowded along the spike, and the berries fuse together as they mature into a single fleshy spadix.

Where does Piper chuvya grow in Sri Lanka?

The species is recorded in Sri Lanka only under cultivation, meaning it is not documented growing wild on the island. This places it alongside other useful plants in the pepper family that have long been grown in home gardens and smallholdings, such as Ceylon black pepper.

What is it called in Sinhala?

In Sinhala, Piper chuvya is known by two local names: Siviya (සිවිය) and Mala bulat (මල බුලත්). The second name translates loosely to "flower betel," reflecting a resemblance to the related betel plant within the same family.

What is its conservation status?

No wild population of Piper chuvya is documented in Sri Lanka; the species is known on the island only as a cultivated plant. No separate conservation designation is recorded for it here.
