Question 2

Where is the best place to surf in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Arugam Bay on the east coast is considered the best surfing destination, with consistent point breaks from June to September. Weligama, Midigama, and Ahangama on the south coast are better for beginners and are at their best from November to April.

Question 3

Can you do white-water rafting in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Kitulgala in the Sabaragamuwa foothills is the main centre for white-water rafting. The Kelani River has rapids up to Grade 4 and trips take roughly two hours on the water. It is accessible as a day trip from Colombo or Kandy.

Question 4

Is scuba diving good in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka has excellent scuba diving, from coral reefs and reef sharks at Pigeon Island (Trincomalee) to colonial-era wrecks near Hikkaduwa. The west coast is best from December to March, while the east coast is clearest from May to September.

Question 5

Where can I watch whales in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Mirissa on the south coast is the most popular location for whale watching, particularly for blue whales, between December and April. Boat trips typically leave before sunrise to maximise chances of sightings. Trincomalee on the east coast is also a good option from May to September.

Question 6

What is Madu Ganga and what can you do there?

Accepted Answer

Madu Ganga is a UNESCO-listed lagoon and wetland near Balapitiya on the west coast. Visitors take guided boat rides through mangrove channels and past small islands, with opportunities to see water monitors, birds, and a cinnamon-making demonstration. It is one of the most popular half-day excursions on the west coast.

Question 7

Which coast of Sri Lanka is best for water activities in summer?

Accepted Answer

For visitors travelling between May and October, the east coast is the better choice. Trincomalee, Pasikudah, and Arugam Bay all have calm, clear conditions during these months when the south-west monsoon affects the west coast. Kalpitiya on the north-west coast is also excellent for kitesurfing during this period.

Question 8

Do I need a certification to scuba dive in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No certification is needed for an introductory or 'try dive', which is supervised throughout by a qualified instructor. For independent diving, a PADI Open Water or equivalent certification is required. Full certification courses are available at several centres along the west coast, typically taking three to four days to complete.
