Moi Talpe by DBI is a four-bedroom beach house at Talpe on Sri Lanka's south coast, with a sandy garden, swings and a small pool running down to the sea. One of the five Moi hotels run by the Sri Lankan group DBI, it can be booked room by room or taken as a whole villa, and it is a short drive along the coast from Galle Fort.
With only four bedrooms, this is a house rather than a hotel. Rooms have air-conditioning, a private bathroom with hot water, a hairdryer and toiletries, and the look is old Galle: four-poster beds, carved timber, polished cement floors and fretwork windows. Wi-Fi is free. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
Children can share with adults in every category. With so few rooms, book early for the winter season.
The main building has a deep veranda under a tiled roof, supported by carved timber pillars, where the restaurant tables are laid out. In front, the garden is part lawn and part sand, with low weathered tables, floor cushions and bean bags under the trees, a small swimming pool, a wooden swing frame on the beach and a rope swing hanging from a leaning palm. Inside there is a lounge with hanging swing seats and bright cushions. There is also a bar, and you step straight from the garden onto the beach.
The restaurant serves Sri Lankan dishes, Asian favourites and international comfort food, with local seafood when it is available, and meals can be taken on the veranda or in the garden. Coffee and light bites are on offer through the day, and the kitchen can arrange picnics, child-friendly plates and meals for special diets if you tell the hotel when you book.
Talpe is a quiet stretch of the coast known for its reef and surf breaks, and the hotel can put you in touch with local surf instructors and snorkelling trips. West along the coast are Unawatuna Beach, the Japanese Peace Pagoda and the ramparts and old streets of Galle Fort. To the east, the coast road passes the stilt fishermen, the Handunugoda Tea Estate, known for its white tea, boat trips on Koggala Lagoon and the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum at Koggala.
Yes. Trains on the coast line from Colombo stop at Thalpe station, and Galle, a larger station with more services, is a short drive west. Arrange a pick-up with the hotel or with us if you are carrying luggage.
Talpe is on the south coast beyond Galle, reached from Bandaranaike International Airport by the expressway that skirts Colombo and runs down to Galle. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Moi Talpe, which takes you all the way to the door.
It suits couples who like small, characterful places, surfers and snorkellers, and above all families or groups of friends who want to take the whole house. It is not a full-service resort: expect a relaxed beach house with a small pool and a good kitchen.
