Era Beach is a ten-suite colonial-style villa on the beach at Thalpe, just south of Galle, built around a courtyard pool a few steps from the Indian Ocean. Formerly marketed as Era Beach by Jetwing and now run independently, it has a strong Dutch influence in its architecture and furnishings, with white colonnades, terracotta roofs, four-poster beds and a mix of antique-style and modern pieces.
All ten suites have complimentary Wi-Fi, bathrobes and slippers, tea and coffee making facilities, a flat-screen television, a hair dryer, a safe and a minibar, and the bathrooms have rain showers. The names below are the ones you will see in the booking form; this is what each one is at the villa.
If you want to wake up to the sea, book a Sea View Suite; if you want privacy and your own water, the Plunge Pool Suites are the ones to choose. With only ten suites, a group taking several of them will have much of the villa to itself.
The villa has three ways to eat. The Dining Room seats 16 around one grand table, and the in-house chefs cook to order, including Sri Lankan dishes. Across the pool, the bar serves local and international drinks, with large couches by the beachside lawn looking out to sea. There are also signature dining experiences: a barbecue, dinner on the sand, a table in the coastal gardens or a meal on the oceanfront terrace.
The courtyard pool sits at the heart of the villa, and the beach is a few seconds' walk through the garden. Thalpe is a good base for surfers, with reef breaks close by and most of the major south coast surf spots within about half an hour, and the reef off this stretch of coast is known for snorkelling and swimming with sea turtles. Further along the coast, boats leave from Mirissa for whale watching in season.
Galle Fort, the UNESCO-listed walled town with its ramparts, lighthouse, churches and boutiques, is about 7 kilometres away in a straight line. Unawatuna Beach is about 3 kilometres up the coast, and the quieter beaches of Dalawella and Mihiripenna are closer still. The Japanese Peace Pagoda on Rumassala hill looks over Galle harbour, and to the east lie Koggala and the islands of Koggala Lagoon.
Yes. Thalpe station on the coastal line is about 400 metres from the villa, and the main Galle station, is a short drive away. The villa is on the main Galle Road in the Lanciyawatta area of Thalpe, with signboards on both sides of the entrance gate.
The villa is about 140 kilometres in a straight line from Bandaranaike International Airport, a drive along the south-west coast. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Era Beach, which takes you all the way to the door.
It suits couples, families and small groups who want a quiet, personal villa on the sand within reach of Galle, rather than a large resort. For more choice along this coast see our places to stay in Thalpe.

A terrible hotel. The price quoted was 550 US per night. This would imply 5* but in reality these people have no idea about running a hotel. We booked for 4 nights but left in disgust. The pool was dirty, the rooms smelt damp, the…
Not the luxurious boutique hotel we were expecting or had paid for. Disappointingly shabby and unwelcoming. The staff seemed to have been cobbled together at the last minute and barely understood our request for a coffee. Any 5…
