A safari into Yala National Park from Talpe is a day set aside for one purpose: to see wild Sri Lanka at close range. Yala sits on the southeastern coast, the second largest national park on the island and the most visited, and it holds the densest population of leopard found anywhere in the world. You travel there and back by air-conditioned vehicle from your hotel, then transfer into an open safari jeep with a driver who also works as your tracker, reading paw prints, alarm calls and the behaviour of deer and monkeys to work out what is moving through the scrub nearby.
The park itself is a stretch of dry-zone forest, thorny scrub and open grassland running down to the Indian Ocean, crossed by red dirt tracks that disappear into the trees. It was set aside as a sanctuary in 1900 and became a national park in 1938, and today holds 44 species of mammal and 215 species of bird across its blocks. Beyond the leopards, there are elephants moving in herds, sloth bears, water buffalo, spotted and sambar deer, wild boar, troops of grey langur and toque macaque, and at the waterholes, mugger crocodiles sharing the mud with painted storks, pelicans and hornbills.
The safari itself runs for three hours inside the park, enough time to cover a reasonable stretch of track, stop wherever the tracker spots something worth watching, and move on when the light or the animals suggest it. You might find a leopard stretched out on a rock outcrop in the sun, or crouched low at a waterhole, or simply crossing a track ahead of the jeep before vanishing into the undergrowth. Nothing about a safari is guaranteed, which is part of what makes an actual sighting worth the wait.
Hotel pickup and drop-off from Talpe is included, along with transport in an air-conditioned vehicle to and from the park, the safari jeep itself, an English-speaking driver and tracker, and a bottle of water per person. Park entrance tickets can be added at booking or left out if you already hold them, and food, drinks, gratuities and personal expenses are not included. At the end of the three hours you return to your vehicle for the journey back to your hotel in Talpe.
