Question 1

What is Vigna aconitifolia used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Vigna aconitifolia is used in Ayurvedic medicine primarily for digestive support, mild inflammation, and as a diuretic. Its seeds are considered relatively easy to digest and are incorporated into formulations aimed at balancing kapha and pitta. Traditional practitioners also recommend the seeds as a nutritive food during convalescence.

Question 2

What is the common name of Vigna aconitifolia?

Accepted Answer

Vigna aconitifolia is most commonly known as moth bean or mat bean. The name 'moth bean' is widely used across South Asia and refers to the plant's importance as a dried pulse crop in arid agricultural regions.

Question 3

Is Vigna aconitifolia native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Vigna aconitifolia is native to South Asia broadly, with origins traced to the Indian subcontinent. It is cultivated and naturalised in Sri Lanka, particularly in the dry zone, where its drought tolerance makes it well suited to the climate and soils.

Question 4

Where is moth bean grown in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Moth bean is cultivated mainly in Sri Lanka's dry zone, which covers much of the north, north-west, and south-east of the island. It thrives in sandy or loamy soils with low moisture and is typically grown as a dry-season crop following the main rice harvest.

Question 5

What does Vigna aconitifolia look like?

Accepted Answer

Vigna aconitifolia is a slender, trailing annual herb with distinctive deeply lobed leaves — the lobing resembles the leaves of the Aconitum plant, which gives the species its name. It produces small yellow flowers and thin pods containing four to nine hard, yellowish-brown to mottled seeds.

Question 6

Is moth bean high in protein?

Accepted Answer

Yes, moth bean seeds are a concentrated plant protein source, typically providing around 22–24 g of protein per 100 g of dried seeds. They also contain dietary fibre, iron, potassium, and B vitamins, making them a nutritionally dense food. Sprouting the seeds further improves nutrient bioavailability.

Question 7

How does Vigna aconitifolia differ from mung bean?

Accepted Answer

While both belong to the Vigna genus, moth bean (Vigna aconitifolia) has a much higher drought tolerance and distinctively lobed leaves, unlike the oval leaves of mung bean (Vigna radiata). Moth bean seeds are harder and darker, and the plant is better adapted to very dry growing conditions.
