Question 1

What is Terminalia zeylanica used for?

Accepted Answer

Terminalia zeylanica is catalogued as a medicinal plant in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition. It has been used in traditional village medicine, with its bark and other parts valued for astringent and antimicrobial properties attributed to high tannin content. Specific clinical studies on this species are limited, and knowledge of its uses is primarily held by practitioners of Sri Lankan indigenous medicine.

Question 2

Is Terminalia zeylanica endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Terminalia zeylanica is endemic to Sri Lanka, meaning it does not occur naturally anywhere else in the world. Its species epithet 'zeylanica' derives from 'Zeylan' — the Dutch and Portuguese rendering of Ceylon — reflecting its exclusive native range on the island.

Question 3

What is the difference between Terminalia zeylanica and Terminalia chebula?

Accepted Answer

Terminalia chebula (Aralu in Sinhala) is a widely used Ayurvedic herb found across South Asia and well-documented in both Indian and Sri Lankan classical texts. Terminalia zeylanica, by contrast, is endemic to Sri Lanka and is part of the local indigenous medicinal tradition rather than the pan-South Asian canon. Both belong to the same genus and share the high tannin content typical of Terminalia species.

Question 4

Where can Terminalia zeylanica be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Terminalia zeylanica is found in the dry and intermediate zone forests of Sri Lanka, typically in lowland and submontane areas with well-drained soils. It may also be encountered in home gardens and village plantations where traditional medicinal plants are cultivated.

Question 5

Is Terminalia zeylanica the same as Kottamba?

Accepted Answer

No. Kottamba is the Sinhala name for Terminalia catappa, also known as Indian Almond, which is a separate species with edible seeds and a broad tropical distribution. Terminalia zeylanica is a distinct, Sri Lanka-endemic species used primarily in traditional medicine rather than as a food plant.

Question 6

How does Terminalia zeylanica relate to Ayurveda in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka has a long Ayurvedic tradition that incorporates both classical pan-South Asian plant knowledge and locally adapted indigenous practice. Terminalia zeylanica features in the island's native medicinal plant catalogue as a species used by local traditional healers, demonstrating how Sri Lanka's endemic biodiversity informed a distinct branch of Ayurvedic knowledge.

Question 7

What threats does Terminalia zeylanica face?

Accepted Answer

As an endemic tree species, Terminalia zeylanica is vulnerable to habitat loss caused by deforestation, agricultural expansion, and urban development. The contraction of Sri Lanka's natural forests over the past century has placed pressure on many endemic plants. Conservation of protected forest areas and ethnobotanical documentation of traditional knowledge are both important to the species' future.
