Question 1

What is Nymphoides aurantiaca?

Accepted Answer

Nymphoides aurantiaca is a floating aquatic plant in the family Menyanthaceae, native to South and Southeast Asia including Sri Lanka. It is recognised by its rounded floating leaves and small, fringed orange-yellow flowers. It is sometimes called the orange marshwort or orange fringed waterlily, though it is not a true waterlily.

Question 2

Is Nymphoides aurantiaca used in Ayurvedic medicine in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is catalogued within the Sri Lankan Ayurvedic medicinal plant inventory. Traditional practitioners have associated related Nymphoides species with cooling and anti-inflammatory properties, and the plant forms part of the island's broader ethnobotanical heritage, though rigorous clinical studies on this specific species remain limited.

Question 3

Where can Nymphoides aurantiaca be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows in still or slow-moving freshwater bodies such as ponds, irrigation tanks, and wetland margins across Sri Lanka's lowland wet and intermediate zones. The ancient tank landscapes of regions like Polonnaruwa and the wetlands of the southwest coast are typical habitat types where such aquatic plants are encountered.

Question 4

What does Nymphoides aurantiaca look like compared to a lotus or water lily?

Accepted Answer

While its floating leaves are superficially similar to those of a lotus or true water lily, the plant belongs to a different family entirely. Its most distinctive feature is the small, fringed orange-yellow flower — the fringed petal margins immediately separate it from the smooth-petalled flowers of true water lilies and lotuses.

Question 5

What family does Nymphoides aurantiaca belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the family Menyanthaceae and the order Asterales, placing it closer to daisies and sunflowers in evolutionary terms than to true water lilies, which are in the family Nymphaeaceae. The genus Nymphoides contains around 50 species globally.

Question 6

Is Nymphoides aurantiaca endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is not endemic to Sri Lanka — the species occurs across South and Southeast Asia. However, it is a recognised component of Sri Lanka's native aquatic flora and is documented in the island's Ayurvedic botanical catalogues. Sri Lanka's freshwater wetland habitats support several species within the Nymphoides genus.

Question 7

Are there conservation concerns around Nymphoides aurantiaca in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

While the species is not currently listed as critically endangered, Sri Lanka's freshwater wetland habitats face pressure from agricultural runoff, land conversion, and invasive aquatic plants. These pressures can indirectly threaten native aquatic species including Nymphoides aurantiaca, making wetland conservation an important priority for biodiversity protection on the island.
