Question 1

Does Sri Lanka have cloud forests?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sri Lanka's central highlands — particularly Horton Plains, the Knuckles Range, and the Peak Wilderness — support genuine cloud forest ecosystems above roughly 1,500 metres. They are home to dozens of species found nowhere else on Earth and are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Question 2

What is the difference between a rainforest and a cloud forest?

Accepted Answer

Rainforests receive most of their moisture as rainfall, while cloud forests derive a significant portion of their water from horizontal precipitation — mist and cloud that condenses directly onto vegetation. Cloud forests are typically cooler, heavily moss-covered, and found at higher elevations than lowland rainforests.

Question 3

What animals can I see in Sri Lanka's cloud forests?

Accepted Answer

Horton Plains and the Knuckles Range are home to Sri Lankan leopards, sambar deer, and a high concentration of endemic birds such as the Sri Lanka whistling thrush and dull-blue flycatcher. Endemic amphibians and unusual plant species are also highlights for naturalists.

Question 4

When should I visit Horton Plains for the best views?

Accepted Answer

January to March offers the clearest morning conditions at Horton Plains. Arriving at the park gate when it opens — typically around 6 a.m. — is important, as cloud cover usually builds by mid-morning and can obscure the views from World's End within a few hours of sunrise.

Question 5

Is Horton Plains the only cloud forest in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Horton Plains is the most visited and best protected example, but cloud forest habitat also exists across the Knuckles Range, the Peak Wilderness, and along high ridges near Nuwara Eliya. Each area has a different character and wildlife community worth exploring.

Question 6

How cold does it get in Sri Lanka's cloud forests?

Accepted Answer

Temperatures at Horton Plains can drop to around 5 °C at dawn, particularly between December and February. Even in warmer months, the combination of mist and wind can make it feel significantly cooler than the lowlands, so a waterproof jacket is always advisable.

Question 7

Are cloud forests in Sri Lanka safe to visit independently?

Accepted Answer

Horton Plains has well-marked trails and ranger patrols, making independent visits straightforward. The Knuckles Range is more remote and the terrain more complex, so hiring a local guide is strongly recommended. A private driver is the most practical way to reach both areas from Colombo or Kandy.
