Question 1

What is Acalypha godseffiana used for in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan ayurvedic tradition, Acalypha godseffiana is catalogued as a medicinal plant valued primarily for its leaf preparations. Traditional uses include topical poultices for skin irritations and aqueous decoctions applied for their astringent properties. It is also widely grown as an ornamental garden shrub across the island.

Question 2

Is Acalypha godseffiana the same as Kuppameniya?

Accepted Answer

No. Kuppameniya is the Sinhala name for Acalypha indica, a closely related but distinct species within the same genus. Sri Lankan ayurveda catalogues the two separately. Acalypha indica has a more extensively documented pharmacological record, while Acalypha godseffiana is recognised in the national medicinal plant register under its own catalogue code (LK94006534).

Question 3

Where does Acalypha godseffiana grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is most commonly found as a cultivated shrub in home gardens, temple grounds, and roadside plantings across Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate climatic zones. It favours warm, humid lowland conditions and is particularly common in the Western, Southern, and Sabaragamuwa provinces.

Question 4

What family does Acalypha godseffiana belong to?

Accepted Answer

Acalypha godseffiana belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae, a large and economically important plant family that also includes rubber, cassava, and several other tropical crops and medicinal shrubs.

Question 5

How is Acalypha godseffiana different from Acalypha wilkesiana?

Accepted Answer

Both are ornamental shrubs in the Acalypha genus, but they differ in leaf colouration and traditional use. Acalypha godseffiana typically displays lance-shaped leaves with cream or pale-yellow marginal variegation, while Acalypha wilkesiana is known for more intensely coloured foliage in red, bronze, and copper tones. Their medicinal applications are documented separately in the Sri Lankan ayurvedic catalogue.

Question 6

Can I buy Acalypha godseffiana plants or dried preparations in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cultivated plants are available from nurseries and herb gardens across the island, particularly in areas with a strong ayurvedic trading tradition. Dried preparations of closely related Acalypha species, such as Acalypha indica, are more widely sold through specialist herbal suppliers and online. Always seek products from verified suppliers who follow Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda guidelines.

Question 7

Is Acalypha godseffiana mentioned in classical ayurvedic texts?

Accepted Answer

The broader Acalypha genus is referenced in South Asian herbal traditions, though classical Sanskrit texts most often document the genus collectively or focus on Acalypha indica. Sri Lanka's national medicinal plant catalogue, maintained by the Department of Ayurveda, provides the most specific official record for Acalypha godseffiana as a distinct entry in Sri Lankan ethnobotany.
