Halketha is a working rubber estate near Mathugama that doubles as a quietly captivating place to stay. The setting is unhurried and deeply rural, and the accommodation has been designed to make the most of the estate's natural surroundings rather than to shut them out.

The Bedroom

The chalet's bedroom is both pretty and practical. The bed is an original take on the four-poster concept, positioned so that when the doors are open, the rubber estate stretches out all around — giving the impression of sleeping outdoors. It is not air-conditioned, but the combination of a cement floor, a wooden roof and the canopy of surrounding rubber trees keeps the interior cool enough that, with a fan running, the heat is barely felt.

One of the quieter pleasures of staying here is the early morning routine of the estate. Workers can be seen collecting rubber sap from coconut shells attached to the trees — a practice that speaks to how ecologically attuned traditional Sri Lankan agriculture has long been.

The Bathroom

The bathroom is excellently designed, fitted with quality fixtures and an outdoor shower set beside a giant rock and a frangipani, known locally as araliya. It is a thoughtful space that makes the most of the estate's greenery.

Meals and Dining

Dining at Halketha is flexible. Meals can be taken at the table outside the room, in the restaurant, or the staff will lay a table wherever guests prefer. The food is straightforward Sri Lankan fare — string hoppers or kiribath for breakfast, rice and curry for lunch, and a varied assortment for dinner. The kitchen is the one area felt to have room for improvement, though it is worth noting that if arrangements are made in advance, the team can bring in a cook from a nearby hotel to prepare more elaborate dishes.
