Jetwing Surf is a 20-cabana eco-resort on a quiet stretch of beach at Pottuvil Point, just north of Arugam Bay on Sri Lanka's east coast. Now trading as Jetwing Surf & Safari, its round, thatched cabanas are built from natural materials such as cadjan, coir, iluk grass and timber among tall coconut palms, with an infinity pool and the surf of Pottuvil Point a couple of minutes' walk away.
Jetwing describes each cabana for two adults. Bookings with us can take up to three adults, or two adults with up to two children; tell us who is travelling so the resort can prepare the right bedding. The cabanas are spread through the palm grove, so ask if you would like one nearer the beach or the pool.
Rella, the main restaurant, sits under a large thatched roof looking over the Indian Ocean, with seating inside and out, an à la carte menu or set menus, plenty of local seafood and a bar with its own small wine cellar. The Pool Bar serves cocktails and snacks by day. Jetwing also offers four signature dining experiences: by the pool, on the beach, a barbecue, or in your own cabana.
The infinity pool, set with lily pads, looks out over the beach, and yoga can be arranged on request. The beach in front of the resort is good for beach volleyball, and lifeguards are on duty. The resident naturalist leads boat safaris on the Pottuvil Lagoon, about a kilometre away, and on the Urani River, where crocodiles, water monitors, monkeys and kingfishers live among the mangroves, and you can join a cookery demonstration after a visit to the local market. Room service runs 24 hours, and laundry, a doctor on call and a taxi service are available.
Yes. Pottuvil Point, a couple of minutes from the resort, is a good break for beginners, and the famous breaks of Arugam Bay, including Whiskey Point, Elephant Rock, Peanut Farm and Crocodile Rock, are close by. See our guide to surfing from Arugam Bay.
Jetwing's naturalist runs safaris into Kumana National Park, a quieter alternative to Yala with elephants, leopards and rare birds such as the black-necked stork, and to Panama Tank, about 22 kilometres away, for crocodiles and birdlife. The forest monastery of Kudumbigala, about 31 kilometres away, has Sri Lanka's only cylindrical dagoba, and the ancient Muhudu Maha Vihara and Magul Maha Viharaya are linked with royal legends. Lahugala and Gal Oya national parks are important elephant corridors.
The resort is on the far side of the island from Bandaranaike International Airport, about 219 kilometres away in a straight line, and the road crosses the hill country or follows the south coast, so plan on a full day's journey. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Jetwing Surf, which takes you all the way to the door.
It suits surfers, couples and families who want a relaxed, low-impact beach base on the east coast, with wildlife safaris and surf lessons on the doorstep. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Arugam Bay, or the other Jetwing hotels around the island.
