Zesta Pettiagala Golden Spikes comes from the Pettiagala garden in the Balangoda area, established in 1880 and named after a box-shaped rock, its landmark. Only one leaf and a bud are picked, from a tea bush unique to the garden, and the tea is carefully handmade: a long, black, well-twisted leaf that brews a floral, golden-yellow cup.
How to make it
Use one to two teaspoons per cup, water just off the boil, and steep for 3 to 4 minutes. Drink it plain, without milk or sugar; the leaf can be infused a second time.
