Sinhagala Peak Full-Day Trek from Sinharaja Rainforest

This is the long walk of the Sinharaja Rain Forest, and most visitors to Kudawa never go this far. You walk with a guide from the Kudawa entrance through a World Heritage rainforest to Sinhagala, a rock summit deep inside the reserve whose name means Lion Rock.

What the day involves

  • The old logging road: the first part follows a road from the logging years past the Kudawa Research Centre, through the mixed-species bird flocks that bring birders to Sinharaja.
  • Into the forest: beyond the Research Centre the path thins and runs through deep forest, with stream crossings and muddy ground.
  • The final climb: the end of the walk is steep, up a boulder-strewn stream and an overgrown slope to the rock.

Is this trek for you?

  • Distance: about 12 km each way by most walkers' accounts, and about 24 km return. No surveyed length exists.
  • Time: plan on 8 to 9 hours on foot, starting when the entrance opens.
  • Fitness: this is a long, hard day on rough ground, suited to walkers who are fit and used to long distances.
  • Conditions: expect leeches and rain in any season. Bring leech socks, long trousers, closed shoes and plenty of water.

If you would rather have a shorter day from the same entrance, see the Mulawella Peak Half-Day Hike.
