Question 1

What makes Ceylon Tea different from other teas?

Accepted Answer

Ceylon Tea is grown exclusively in Sri Lanka across a range of elevations that produce distinct regional flavour profiles — from delicate, floral high-grown teas to bold, dark low-grown varieties. The Sri Lanka Tea Board's lion logo certifies origin, ensuring every packet labelled Ceylon Tea was grown, manufactured, and packed in the country. The island's combination of altitude, tropical rainfall, and temperature variation creates conditions that few other tea-growing nations can replicate.

Question 2

What is the best region in Sri Lanka for tea?

Accepted Answer

Nuwara Eliya is widely regarded as the premium high-grown region, producing pale, fragrant teas with a clean, brisk character. Uva is prized for its distinctive sharpness during the July–September harvest, while Dimbula teas offer a full, golden-coloured cup between January and March. The best region depends on your flavour preference — lighter and floral, or stronger and brisk.

Question 3

Can I visit a tea factory in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Many estates in the hill country welcome visitors, and a guided factory tour typically covers withering, rolling, oxidation, and firing. Bluefield Tea Gardens near Talawakele is one of the more accessible options. Visiting in the morning gives you the best chance of seeing the full process in operation, as most factories run their heaviest production early in the day.

Question 4

What is the best time of year to visit Sri Lanka's tea country?

Accepted Answer

The hill country is generally pleasant between December and April when the south-west monsoon is absent. January to March is considered the prime season for Dimbula teas, while Uva's celebrated harvest runs from July to September during a different weather window. The landscape stays green year-round because tea requires consistent rainfall, so there is no truly bad time for a visit — just different seasonal tea characters.

Question 5

What does BOP mean on a Ceylon Tea packet?

Accepted Answer

BOP stands for Broken Orange Pekoe, a grade describing medium-sized broken leaf pieces that infuse quickly and produce a full, robust cup suited to adding milk. It is one of the most common grades on Sri Lankan export teas. Higher grades like OP (Orange Pekoe) use whole leaves and brew more slowly, while finer grades like BOPF are used primarily in teabags.

Question 6

Is Ceylon Tea the same as black tea?

Accepted Answer

Most Ceylon Tea exported internationally is black tea — fully oxidised — but Sri Lanka also produces green, white, and oolong teas from the same Camellia sinensis plant. Ceylon Green Tea is gaining popularity for its lighter, more delicate character. The term Ceylon Tea simply refers to the geographical origin rather than a specific processing style.

Question 7

How should I store Ceylon Tea once I have bought it?

Accepted Answer

Store Ceylon Tea in an airtight container away from direct sunlight, heat, and strong odours. Loose-leaf teas packaged in foil-lined pouches retain freshness well if resealed after each use. Properly stored, most black teas will remain flavourful for up to two years, though the peak drinking window is typically within the first twelve months of processing.

Question 8

What is a single-estate Ceylon Tea?

Accepted Answer

A single-estate tea comes from one named garden rather than a blend of leaves from multiple sources. The estate name, elevation, and grade are usually stated on the packet, giving a traceable, place-specific flavour profile. Single-estate teas tend to reflect seasonal variation more clearly and are often sought by buyers who want a consistent relationship with a particular terroir.
