Question 1

What is Cryptocoryne thwaitesii?

Accepted Answer

Cryptocoryne thwaitesii is an aquatic plant endemic to Sri Lanka, belonging to the family Araceae. It grows in slow-moving freshwater streams and shaded riverbanks in the island's wet zone, and is included in Sri Lanka's catalog of ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 2

Why is it called Cryptocoryne thwaitesii?

Accepted Answer

The species is named after George Henry Kendrick Thwaites, a 19th-century British botanist who directed the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya and produced the foundational flora survey of Sri Lanka. Many Sri Lankan plant species bear his name as recognition of his scientific contributions.

Question 3

Where does Cryptocoryne thwaitesii grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It grows in sheltered freshwater stream margins and shallow watercourses within Sri Lanka's wet zone, typically at lower to middle elevations in forested areas. It requires shaded conditions, soft water, and high humidity to thrive in the wild.

Question 4

Can Cryptocoryne thwaitesii be kept in an aquarium?

Accepted Answer

Yes, like other Cryptocoryne species, C. thwaitesii can be cultivated in planted aquaria. It generally prefers low to moderate light, soft slightly acidic water, and a nutrient-rich substrate. It is less commonly available in the trade than wider-ranging Sri Lankan relatives such as C. wendtii.

Question 5

Is Cryptocoryne thwaitesii used in ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

The species is documented in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalog, indicating recognition within the island's indigenous medical tradition. Specific applications are the domain of trained ayurvedic physicians, and the plant is listed among the aquatic species acknowledged by Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda.

Question 6

Is Cryptocoryne thwaitesii endangered?

Accepted Answer

Endemic Sri Lankan Cryptocoryne species face threats from habitat loss, stream degradation, and collection pressure. C. thwaitesii has a restricted natural range, making it sensitive to changes in water quality and riparian forest cover. Conservation of intact wet-zone forest is considered essential to its survival.

Question 7

Where in Sri Lanka can I see endemic aquatic plants like Cryptocoryne thwaitesii?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy offer one of the best opportunities to view Sri Lankan endemic and aquatic plants in a curated setting. Wild populations can potentially be observed during naturalist-guided visits to wet-zone river systems and forest reserves in south-western Sri Lanka.
