Villa Wild Ceylon

Puttalam, Sri Lanka

Villa Wild Ceylon is an antique-filled boutique villa at Andigama in the Puttalam district, set on a wooded estate of teak trees with its own lake and a swimming pool, and let as a whole house. Built in the traditional Sri Lankan style, with a long pillared verandah and old furniture throughout, it greets you at the entrance with a classic bullock cart, a thirikale, and suits anyone looking for quiet countryside rather than a beach resort.

Which room should I book?

  • Entire Villa – the only way to book Villa Wild Ceylon: the whole house, its bedrooms, the verandah, the pool and the grounds are yours for the stay. Listings describe five bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, sleeping up to ten guests, with air conditioning and mosquito nets in the rooms. Up to six adults can be booked online; the villa can take a larger party of eight or ten, so for a bigger group ask us to arrange the booking.

Children are welcome with their parents. Because the villa is let to one party at a time, you will not share the house, the pool or the garden with other guests.

What is the villa like?

The house is a celebration of old Ceylon. The verandah, its timber pillars lit warmly at night, opens onto the pool, and the rooms are furnished with antique chests and cabinets, carved timber screens, bold artworks and framed prints. Inside there are comfortable sitting rooms that open onto the pool; outside there is a garden, a terrace and a barbecue area. Wi-Fi is available.

What is there to do at the villa?

Most guests come to slow down. The estate's teak woodland and the lake attract birds and other wildlife, and are good for an early-morning or evening walk. The pool is the centre of the day, and a barbecue by the water makes an easy evening. Because the villa is let as a whole, it works well for a family reunion, a birthday or a group of friends who want somewhere private to gather.

Where is Villa Wild Ceylon?

Andigama is a village in the countryside of the Puttalam district, inland from the coast road between Chilaw and Puttalam. It is a quiet rural area well away from the tourist trail, so arrange your arrival with us in advance.

What is nearby?

The birdlife of the Anawilundawa wetland sanctuary, a protected chain of ancient tanks, is one of the closest outings. Chilaw is known for the Hindu temple of Munneswaram. Inland, the twelfth-century royal ruins of Panduwasnuwara and the rock fortress at Yapahuwa make good half-day trips. Further north, Wilpattu National Park is the place for leopard safaris, and the Kalpitiya peninsula is known for dolphin watching and kitesurfing; both are long day trips, so set off early.

How do I get from the airport to Villa Wild Ceylon?

The villa lies north of Bandaranaike International Airport, which is on the same side of Colombo, so you avoid the city altogether. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Villa Wild Ceylon, which takes you all the way to the door.

Who is Villa Wild Ceylon best suited to?

It suits families and groups of friends who want a private country house full of character, with a pool and space to themselves, and travellers interested in old Sri Lankan homes and furniture. It is not a beach stay: the sea is a drive away. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Puttalam.
