Tabula Rasa Resort & Spa is a boutique resort of 24 rooms, suites and villas on a jungle-covered hill above Habaraduwa on Sri Lanka's south coast, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Built by a Dutch architect and designer couple and opened in early 2019, it sits about two kilometres inland, looking out over the treetops to Habaraduwa Bay.
All rooms are air-conditioned, with a minibar, tea and coffee making facilities and a shower, and every room comes with a pair of binoculars for watching the jungle and the coast. There are four kinds of accommodation:
The room choices in our booking box are general categories rather than these names, so when you send your request tell us which of the four you would like and who is travelling, and we will confirm the room and rate with the resort.
The restaurant serves international dishes alongside Sri Lankan specialities, with oriental and Western cooking on the menu. The rooftop bar has a fire pit and looks over the garden, and the swimming pool, an infinity pool, faces out towards Habaraduwa beach.
The hilltop spa offers Ayurvedic treatments, and there is a sunrise yoga deck for early-morning sessions above the jungle. The grounds cover about three acres of hillside, and the resort is small enough that service is personal; guests regularly single out the staff.
The beach at Habaraduwa is a few minutes' drive down the hill, and Koggala Beach and the stilt fishermen of the coast, often photographed at Koggala and Ahangama, are close by. Boat trips on Koggala Lagoon visit its small islands, and the sea turtle conservation project at Koggala is a short drive away. Galle and its fort are around 20 minutes west, with Unawatuna Beach and the Japanese Peace Pagoda on the way, and Handunugoda Tea Estate makes an easy half-day visit inland.
From Bandaranaike International Airport the drive runs down the Southern Expressway towards Galle and then along the coast to Habaraduwa. The simplest way to arrive is our private transfer from Colombo airport to Tabula Rasa, which takes you all the way up the hill to the resort. Habaraduwa also has a station on the coastal railway line.
It suits couples and small families who want a quiet, design-led hideaway with a pool and spa, close to Galle and the south-coast beaches but away from the busy coast road. A suite or villa with a plunge pool makes the most of the setting. For more choice in the area, see our places to stay in Habaraduwa.

Great hotels benefit from the work of inspirational architects, but they are truly great because of the culture and atmosphere created by the staff. Tabula Rasa has great form, there is no question about that, but the staff really…
