Question 1

What is Pus Wel used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Pus Wel (Entada pursaetha) is used in Sri Lankan and Ayurvedic medicine to treat skin diseases, fever, abscesses, post-partum muscle pain, sty, glandular swellings, and severe back pain. Different parts of the plant — including the seeds, bark, and leaves — are prepared in decoctions, poultices, or topical applications depending on the condition.

Question 2

How big are Entada pursaetha seed pods?

Accepted Answer

The seed pods of Entada pursaetha can reach up to one metre in length, making them among the largest legume pods on Earth. The pods are light brown, slightly curved, and segmented, with individual seeds that are typically 4 to 7 cm broad, glossy, and rounded or rectangular.

Question 3

Why do Entada pursaetha seeds wash up on beaches far from Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The seeds of Entada pursaetha are highly buoyant and can survive immersion in seawater for extended periods. This allows them to travel long distances on ocean currents — a dispersal strategy called thalassochory — and seeds have reportedly washed ashore in Europe and the Caribbean after drifting across entire ocean basins.

Question 4

Where can I see Entada pursaetha in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Entada pursaetha is found in the lowland and mid-elevation tropical forests of Sri Lanka's wet zone, particularly around forest edges and riverine areas. Guided botanical walks in and around reserves such as Sinharaja give visitors the best chance of spotting the vine and its distinctive large pods.

Question 5

What does Entada pursaetha look like — how do I identify it?

Accepted Answer

It is a large woody climbing vine with bipinnate leaves bearing small, rounded leaflets. The flowers are small and white, but the plant is most easily identified by its enormous curved pods — up to one metre long — and its broad, glossy brown seeds, which are among the largest of any legume species.

Question 6

Is Entada pursaetha found only in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No — Entada pursaetha has a pantropical distribution, occurring across tropical Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and parts of Australia. In Sri Lanka it is one of many medicinal plants documented within the island's rich ethnobotanical tradition, but it is by no means endemic to the country.

Question 7

Are there scientific studies on the medicinal properties of Entada pursaetha?

Accepted Answer

Yes, preliminary laboratory studies have identified saponins, alkaloids, and flavonoids in various parts of the plant, compounds associated with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and analgesic activity. However, most research has been conducted at laboratory or preclinical scale; large-scale clinical trials validating traditional uses are still limited.
