Question 1

What is Cryptocoryne nevillii?

Accepted Answer

Cryptocoryne nevillii is a small aquatic plant in the family Araceae, endemic to Sri Lanka. It grows in shallow freshwater habitats such as streams, paddy-field margins, and irrigation channels in the lowland wet zone. It is valued both as a medicinal plant in ayurvedic tradition and as a popular species in the planted aquarium hobby.

Question 2

Is Cryptocoryne nevillii endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the species is endemic to Sri Lanka, meaning it is not found naturally anywhere else in the world. The island supports several endemic Cryptocoryne species, and C. nevillii is among the most recognised, particularly in botanical and aquarist communities.

Question 3

What are the medicinal uses of Cryptocoryne nevillii in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Cryptocoryne nevillii is catalogued as an ayurvedic medicinal plant in Sri Lanka, reflecting the indigenous knowledge of the island's healers. Detailed pharmacological documentation of this particular species remains limited in modern literature, though it belongs to a genus that has attracted ongoing phytochemical interest across South Asia.

Question 4

How do I grow Cryptocoryne nevillii in an aquarium?

Accepted Answer

The species does well in freshwater aquariums with temperatures between roughly 22 and 28 degrees Celsius, soft to moderately hard water, and a neutral to slightly acidic pH. It tolerates low to moderate light and spreads gradually via runners to form a compact foreground carpet. Allow several weeks for the plant to establish before expecting vigorous growth.

Question 5

Where exactly does Cryptocoryne nevillii grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is found primarily in Sri Lanka's southwestern lowland wet zone, in slow-moving or still freshwater habitats including shaded forest streams, paddy-field edges, and shallow irrigation channels. The species favours areas with consistent water flow, partial shade, and relatively clean, low-mineral water.

Question 6

Is Cryptocoryne nevillii endangered or threatened?

Accepted Answer

Like many freshwater aquatic plants, C. nevillii faces localised habitat pressures from wetland drainage, agricultural land use change, and water pollution. Conservation of Sri Lanka's wet-zone stream corridors and freshwater wetlands is critical to maintaining wild populations. Commercial cultivation for the aquarium trade now supplies much of global demand, which helps reduce collection pressure on wild plants.

Question 7

What does the name 'Cryptocoryne' mean?

Accepted Answer

The genus name Cryptocoryne derives from Greek, meaning roughly 'hidden club', a reference to the concealed spadix within the spathe inflorescence characteristic of the group. The species epithet nevillii honours a person named Nevill, following the botanical tradition of naming species after collectors or naturalists associated with their discovery.
