Über dieses Erlebnis

A day in Yala begins long before the jeep tracks, with a drive down the southern coast from Galle through Hambantota and Tissamaharama to the Katagamuwa entrance. This is Sri Lanka's second-largest national park, close to 979 square kilometres of dry monsoon forest, thorn scrub, open grassland and brackish lagoon running down to the Indian Ocean. It sits on the southeastern coast across the Southern and Uva provinces, and has been protected ground since 1900, made a national park outright in 1938. It remains the most visited park in the country, and for good reason: few places pack so much life into ground you can cover in a single safari.

The tour collects you from your hotel in Galle at eleven in the morning, in an air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver, for the run down to the park. By two in the afternoon you transfer into an open safari jeep with its own English-speaking driver, who doubles as your tracker, for a three-hour drive through the park's tracks. What you see is a matter of chance and patience, but Yala's terrain of waterholes, grassland and scrub concentrates wildlife around the water, which is exactly what makes a slow jeep and a sharp-eyed tracker worthwhile. Elephants, wild water buffalo, sloth bears and the park's famous leopards all move through this landscape, alongside spotted deer, wild boar, macaques, hares and a long list of birdlife drawn to the wetlands and lagoons.

The experience is unscripted in the way a safari should be: a bee-eater perched beside a line of wild boar on sandy ground, a herd of spotted deer with fawns at a muddy waterhole, a leopard crouched low to drink before vanishing back into the scrub. Toque macaques groom each other on sunlit rocks, a black-naped hare sits alert in the open, and the forest keeps its own rhythm around the jeep. Nothing here is staged for the camera, which is precisely the appeal of a park governed by Sri Lanka's Department of Wildlife Conservation and left largely to its own patterns of movement and water.

After the safari you rejoin your original vehicle for the drive back to Galle, with the day finishing around nine in the evening, roughly twelve hours door to door. The tour is run privately, for your own party, with a minimum age of five for participants. Hotel pick-up and drop-off, the air-conditioned transport, the safari jeep with driver and tracker, and a litre of bottled mineral water per person are all part of the arrangement, along with all taxes and service charges. Food and drinks, gratuities, park entrance fees, and personal expenses are for you to settle separately.
